Mission and ethics

Why do linguistic fieldwork?
Working with speakers, generally in the places where they live, allows linguists to broaden our empirical coverage and critically test theories about human language. It also connects linguistic research directly with communities in ways that benefit and include them. Linguistic fieldwork has also led to discoveries about languages, theories, and methodologies that are so normal now that we do not even think about them, like the minimal pair test.
Ethics Statement
The KU Field Linguistics Lab is committed to the respect and equality of peoples in the United States and around the world. Our work demonstrates the complexity and genius of all languages and language varieties, no matter what the social status of the speaker. We work with inclusive methodologies that incorporate indigenous knowledge and perspectives as boosting support to our work rather than as impediments to overcome. We also commit to supporting and participating in efforts to preserve, revitalize, and reclaim languages.
